Hosted by Peter Blattmann This tour will let you experience a superb
collection of UNESCO World Heritage sites such as castles, palaces and
exquisite centuries old manicured gardens. Explore historic Porto and
the romantic city of Lisbon. Visit the famous cellars and taste
extraordinary wines and Port wines in the presence of cellarmasters in
the Douro and Alantejo wine regions. Overnight in charming and unique,
Pousadas and Palaces. Learn the secrets of Portuguese cuisine from a
culinary master and savour the delicacies of regional dishes at
award-winning restaurants and farms.
Your tour guide: Armindo Valente has a degree in oenology from the “Instituto Vinho do Porto” and has been established as a specialist in organizing gourmet wine tours in the Douro and Alantejo wine regions. - Itinerary - Day 1:
After the airport formalities, transfer to Amarante, a charming, historic and small town, where you will check-in at the Casa da Calçada , a XVI century palace now a Relais & Châteaux and a landmark of the Portuguese gastronomy. Prior to tasting his dishes the award-winning chef will give you an overview of the the Portuguese gastronomy.
Day 2:
After breakfast a short ride will take you to Porto. Your study of Port wine will begin at some of the most famous Port wine cellars followed by lunch at the “Feitoria Inglesa” known for it’s breathtaking décor. After lunch a guided walking tour through the historical sector, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Free time for shopping. Return to Amarante after dinner on your own. Day 3:
This morning we will be travelling to the Douro Valley, through the Marão Mountains and, at Fonseca’s Quinta do Panascal you will taste their wines and Port wines followed by lunch. Drive to Pinhao to the Vintage House Hotel, on the banks of the Douro river, surrounded by vineyards. Time to relax followed by regional dinner. Day 4:
Your day will start with a visit to Quinta do Vale D. Maria a famous small estate, producing high quality and exclusive wines. A short boat ride will take you to Quinta do Crasto, another highly acclaimed estate, where winemaking dates back as far as 1615.
After tasting their award-winning wines and Port wines enjoy lunch among the vineyards overlooking the Douro valley. Continue sailing back to the hotel. Dinner will be served at Ferreira’s Quinta do Porto preceded by tasting of Sogrape and Ferreira’s wines and Port wines. Day 5:
Today you will start your day experiencing the legendary railway travelling in a private carriage to remote Quinta do Vesuvio owned by the Symington family. The vistas during the trip are breathtaking. After the tasting, travel by boat for lunch to a very typical restaurant of the Douro. Return by train to the hotel.
A candlelight dinner will be served at Casa da Calçada, being part of 13 noble houses, a XVII century building, in baroque style in the very unique village of Provezende, a historic site in the Douro not to be missed. Day 6:
Today you will explore Marialva, a XII century village, surrounded by medieval walls. The drive will be through the “heart” of the mountains contrasting with deep valleys, shaped by rivers and coloured by Port wine vineyards and olive trees. In Marialva you will be hosted to an olive oil/tasting/lunch by the owners of Casas do Côro, a complex of medieval village houses, fully rehabilitated and now a charming hotel. Then on to Belmonte, another medieval town to the Pousada Convento de Belmonte where you will taste “Queijo da Serra”, (Mountains Cheese), considered by the Larousse des Fromages, one of the best cheeses in the world, followed by dinner. Day 7:
Today you will leave the mountains region and take the road to the Alentejo wine region. Arriving in Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site we will stay at the Convento dos Loios (Loios Monastery). Following lunch at the Pousada you will be free to explore the town with dinner on your own.
Day 8 :
In the morning you will have the opportunity to taste some of the best wines from the Alentejo at Quinta do Carmo, owned by the Rothschilds of Bordeaux. Next a visit to the famous Esporão vineyards. Following a wine tasting you will appreciate the local olive oils and cheeses in their farm house. After lunch Chef António Amaral will engage you to to cook the delicacies of the region followed by dinner with Alantejo best wines. Day 9 : On your way to Lisbon you will taste the best wines of the region at Jose Maria da Fonseca winery where lunch will be served. Arriving in Lisbon you will check-in at the Tivoli Hotel, one of the most traditional 5 star properties.You will be free to explore the fine shops around the hotel..A farewell gala dinner will be served in the Marquis of Fronteira Palace, built during the XVII and XVIII centuries in the Italian style. After dinner you will be taken to a “Casa de Fado”(Fado House), located in the very heart of Lisbon, the Alfama, where the “heart” of the Portuguese will sing for you.
Today you will be visiting Sintra, another UNESCO World Heritage site, visiting castels dating back to the Moorish domination and sumptuous Palaces built in the X III century. After lunch in a XVIII century fortress (Fortaleza do Guincho), now a Relais & Chateaux and a 1-star Michelin restaurant, you will be transferred to Lisbon for more shopping and dinner on your own. Day 11 B
